Paia

Photo of the Week, err… Month?
4/1/2013

I’m embarrassed to say that it has been almost 6 months since we posted our last photo of the week. So, to make up for  our lack of follow through, laziness, time, (whatever you want to call it) here are 7 photos (one for every month we missed plus 2 bonus shots) of our recent visit to Paia; a small hippy-tourist town on Maui.

As with most tourist towns, there were a lot of people, all with cameras cruising the sidewalks of Paia on the day of our visit. Rather that shoot the same old stuff as everyone else, Evelyn and I tried to find the hidden gems that fall through the cracks of most pixelsavers. Therefore, some of the following shots would probably not be endorsed by the Paia Chamber of Commerce, but we found them more personal & interesting and we hope that you will too.

Paia’s Secret Tattoo Parlor:

Bi-Wheel Meet & Greet: ”Gary, meet Harley. Harley, this is Gary. It’s okay to be bi”

Ally Door (not to be confused with my niece Ali Doar):

An ally that probably should also have a door:

Of course, we never travel anywhere without Joe Lego. “C’mon Joe, I’m thirsty! Pick out a beer!”

“Aw, finally!”

Check all Surf Boards at the Door (Apparently there are no surfboards allowed in this establishment):

If you’re in Maui looking for a canoe, do not rent the one advertised as  10% off!

Deceptive Sunset

Photo of the Week:
10/9/2012

One of the most scenic bridges in Washington State is the Deception Pass Bridge that connects Whidbey Island to the mainland of Skagit County. For a few days twice a year (spring and fall) the sun will set directly under the bridge. Picking the right day to photograph such a solar event is the easy part. Getting a nice day in the spring or fall is another story. Even though we knew the sun would not be centered on the bridge for a few more days, we decided to take advantage of the nice weather. The added effect of smoke in the atmosphere from the wildfires east of the Cascades made for some spectacular shots.  Here is one of our favorites (click on the photo see some more):

Marooned on Lake Tahoe

Photo of the Week:
8/19/2012

We almost expected to find a Wilson volleyball on this beach. Anyway, this is one of many photos from our latest annual trip to Lake Tahoe. We just never get tired of photographing the Tahoe region’s beauty. Click on the image if you would like to see more.

From Chaos to Order

Photo of the Week:

Whether you are neat freak or a hopeless disgusting slob, we have a photo of the week for you (I won’t tell you which is which. Roll your mouse over your favorite photo to find out).

Pollinators

Photo of the week:
6/3/2012

It is spring here in the northwest, though you wouldn’t know it by the weather. No sun for the last few days and none in the forecast. Regardless, the bees are out pollinating our flowers so I grabbed the camera with the macro lens  and headed out into the backyard today to get some pics. It was overcast, but not raining and contrary to popular belief, many times an overcast sky is more desirable than a sunny sky for taking photos. Especially macros. Why…? Because shadows can ruin a macro and there are no shadows on cloudy days. Of course (if it were sunny) I could put on our macro ring strobe for fill light, but who wants to go through that trouble?

I couldn’t decide which shot I liked best, so here are 3 of my favorites. You can see more in our gallery by clicking here:

My first thought when I saw this shot was that it reminded me of a Panda so I call it “Panda Bee”

Even bees can be photo-shy

The bees love our chives. Does anyone speak “Bee Chive”? (a gratuitous reference to the movie “Airplane”)

Red Planet

Photo of the Week:
5/6/2012

We had our second year in a row with a wet & cold spring resulting in a not-so-great tulip photography opportunities, so no new shots this year, but I did find some time to play around with a shot from a couple of years ago. Thanks to Steve Cavanaugh for the inspiration (and the tutorial) for this technique:

Evelyn is training for a 40 mile bike race, a 200 mile Seattle-to-Portland bike ride while mixing in some weight training and yoga 3 times a week. She loves our hot tub!

Wetrock

Photo of The Week:
3/19/2012

I have to say that this is one of the strangest “waterfalls” I have ever photographed. I don’t exactly know why I find it so intriguing, but regardless I thought it worthy of our photo of the week.

This photo would have been awesome if there  was a frog sitting on one of those lily pads. Hence the title for this photo.

How to Create Hotel Room Art

While going through my old photos trying to decide which to delete and which to keep I ran across some uninspiring shots I took of a fountain a couple of years ago at Tahoe:

This shot was not so bad. Not my best work, not really worth sharing with anyone, but maybe worth keeping. So I kept it and moved on to the next shot. But then I tried to get fancy and took some closeups at high shutter speeds to try and “freeze” the water running down the rocks and failed miserably:

Well, this photo has no redeeming quality. It is dull, uninspiring, boring, not to mention a bit underexposed. I was about to hit the [delete] button when I stopped and thought to myself; “I think I will load this up in Photoshop and see what I can do with this first”. So I did and adjusted the exposure, added some saturation, applied some filters and a few other tweaks here and there and Voila! I created a work of art worthy of being hung in any discriminating hotel/motel room!

So there you have it. Before you delete that crappy photo to make room for other crappy photos remember this: With a little time and effort you can turn any photo into “Hotel Room Art”.
